Autism Spectrum Disorders
When was the last time your doctor spent an hour with you?
We all know how rushed doctor's appointments can be. Most follow up office visits are 10 minutes and usually limited to 1 complaint per visit. At the Center for Holistic Medicine we change that approach by taking time to get to know you. An average initial functional medicine visit may take 90 minutes. We take the time to hear your medical concerns and also to understand the path that you travelled to get to your current health. We inquire about your diet and nutrition, your exercise and wellness routines, stresses and sleep. We also learn about your personal family history and lifestyle choices that can be contributing to your physical condition. After we have explored your concerns and any contributing factors, a thorough physical exam including nutritional exam is performed.
Most clients leave empowered, having an understanding of the changes that are needed to get them on the path to wellness. They are given a nutritional plan, detailed labs to explore causes for their conditions and supplements, exercise plans and other therapeutic modalities such as acupuncture and microcurrent to improve their symptoms. This approach allows the practitioner and the patient to work together in reaching their wellness goals.
Functional medicine is a science based and personalized healthcare approach that assesses and treats the underlying causes of illness. Rather than just treating the symptoms of a disease, an upstream approach is used. Functional medicine changes the what (your diagnosis) you have to why (what lead you to your condition). Some of the systems that can be troubled include; your body's immune function, structural status, energetic and digestive capacity, detoxification ability, genetic predispositions and hormonal imbalances. With these in mind, individually tailored therapies are used to restore health and improve function and wellness.
A Patient Centered Approach
Every individual is unique. This is what makes functional medicine so useful. Traditional medicine frequently involves a diagnosis to define your condition, and prescription medications to decrease your symptoms. The functional medicine approach, however, is an upstream approach, looking at the underlying causes of your condition, incorporation of lifestyle modifications, including, nutrition, exercise, stress management as well as traditional medications and supplements to modulate them.
Integrating best medical practices
Functional medicine integrates traditional medical practices with what are sometimes considered "alternative" or "integrative" medicine. There is a strong focus on prevention and the use of lifestyle approaches to modify wellbeing. One of the principles of functional medicine is to "remove what harms and give what heals" to promote optimal wellness. Treatment plans are individualized with the use of the latest laboratories, detailed history taking and physical exams.
A combination of supplements, prescriptions and lifestyle interventions are considered based on your individual evaluation. At the Center for Holistic Medicine we use many different therapeutic approaches including; mild hyperbaric oxygen, medical acupuncture, frequency specific microcurrent as well as traditional and functional medicine to treat a range of conditions from Autism Spectrum Disorders to Zinc deficiency.
We look forward to working with you on your journey to health and wellness.
